Funded by the Government of Alberta as part of the Culture + Entertainment District improvements, the new 6 Street S.E. Underpass adds a second crossing under the Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC) rail line, improving connections between 9 Avenue S.E. and 11 and 12 Avenues S.E. The project enhances access to Scotia Place and surrounding developments, supporting a more connected, walkable, and vibrant community.
The 6 Street S.E. Underpass will include four vehicle lanes, dedicated pedestrian sidewalks, a multi‑use pathway, shaded rest areas, and railings that separate roadways from pathways.
Designed with safety and accessibility in mind, the clear‑span bridge removes the centre support columns, providing open sightlines for drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists, creating a welcoming and comfortable environment for those visiting the area.
Construction will take place in phases over the next two years until expected opening in 2028.
Key work activities include:
Preparing the site and relocating utilities
Completing rail related work including constructing temporary tracks before underpass construction
Building the underpass structure and roadway
Finishing work including lighting, finishes, and landscaping
Some construction activities will affect roads and access in the surrounding area. Temporary lane reductions, detours, and access changes are expected during construction.
Current closures and detours include:
6 Street S.E. closed north of 9 Avenue S.E. from February 2026 – Fall 2026
6 Street S.E. closed between 11 Avenue S.E. and 12 Avenue S.E from July 20, 2026 – September 2026
9 Avenue S.E. reduced to two lanes, with one lane eastbound and one lane westbound, from 5 Street S.E. to east of 6 Street S.E. from January 2026 – Fall 2026
