Some situations are best handled by alternate measures, as opposed to issuing a summons or notice. The Community Mediation Calgary Society offers this type of service, together with some tips.

THINK about the situation, your role, the perspectives of the people involved in a dispute, what they want of you, along with your options.

LISTEN to the external verbal and non-verbal messages those involved are conveying.

MOVE towards the best response given the situation, the people involved, as well as your resources (mental, physical, etc.). Consider issuing a summons, a notice or a warning, using alternate dispute resolution, or other action.

Having those involved actually speak with each other may help. If possible, avoid connecting people who are in an angry state.

If that is not feasible, consider Community Mediation Calgary Society as an alternative. Often mediation does work and it is always free. CMCS will brief those who feel mediation is an option.

Community Mediation connects the party requesting the mediation, the other person(s), along with a skilled third party in the neighborhood, a trained mediator. The goal is to create an environment where a person can feel safe, talk openly, honestly and with respect with the party they are in conflict with.

Each of the parties can discuss their concerns, gain some understanding, and come to a written agreement that can be signed in good faith.

When successful, the benefit of mediation is a long term solution that is satisfactory to both of the parties.
