Transit Public Safety

You'll see us. Supporting safety. Taking action.

From helping customers and answering questions to addressing unsafe behaviour and enforcing bylaws, transit peace officers are here to help keep transit safe and welcoming.

What you'll see us doing

Transit peace officers help keep transit safe and welcoming through visible patrols, fare checks, incident response and work with partners.

Here are six ways riders may see transit peace officers at work:

  • Supporting customers

Transit peace officers help riders with questions, directions and safety concerns and connect people with support when they are lost, unwell, injured or in distress.

  • Visible safety presence

Officers patrol CTrain stations, platforms, trains, buses and nearby transit spaces throughout the day, speaking with customers and employees, identifying concerns early and responding where needed.

  • Enforcing fares and bylaws

Transit peace officers support a safe, respectful transit environment by checking proof of payment, issuing violation tickets if proof of fare is not provided, enforcing transit bylaws and executing warrants when necessary and taking action to address unsafe behaviour, disorder or non-compliance.

  • Responding to incidents

Transit peace officers respond to safety concerns across the transit system, including medical emergencies, welfare checks, social disorder, collisions, lost property and missing or separated children. They provide immediate help, gather information and coordinate with police, fire or emergency medical services when needed.

  • Connecting people to help

Transit peace officers work with outreach teams and community organizations to connect people with health care, shelter, treatment and housing supports, helping address needs and reduce repeated emergency responses.

  • Building safer communities

Transit peace officers work with police, emergency services and community partners to address safety concerns across Calgary’s transit network. Transit Public Safety’s five district offices place officers closer to the communities they serve, improving visibility, response times and rider safety.

Frequently asked questions

Are officers only responsible for fare enforcement?

No. They also patrol, support customers, respond to calls, assist during emergencies and connect people with services.

At stations and platforms, on CTrains and buses, and in nearby transit spaces. Locations change with calls and system needs.

What can I ask an officer for help with?

Directions, information, safety concerns, separation from someone, or a person who may need help.

What is the difference between outreach and enforcement?

Enforcement addresses unsafe behaviour and non-compliance. Outreach connects people with community and social supports.

Why do officers check fares?

A valid fare is required. Fare checks support compliance and are one part of the wider safety role. Learn about fare compliance and penalties for fare evasion at calgary.ca/TransitFareEvasion
