GLENMORE TWIN ARENA Stu Peppard Arena Replacement

Stu Peppard Arena, located at the Glenmore Athletic Park, has reached the end of its useful life and will be replaced with a new twin-ice facility, addressing the need for additional ice space in west Calgary.

Project Update – Apr. 2024

Designs for this new facility are in their final stages. Construction is expected to begin in the fall of 2024. Stu Peppard Arena will remain open to the public until the new Glenmore Twin Arena is complete.

Background

Glenmore Athletic Park was built in 1962 and featuring an arena, aquatic centre and velodrome, all constructed between 1962 – 1975.

In 2010, the Council-approved Concept Plan for Foothills and Glenmore Athletic Parks identified Stu Peppard Arena as nearing the end of its useful life due to challenges with its age as well as limitations as a single-sheet ice facility.

In June 2021, Council approved $45 million in funding to construct a twin-ice facility to replace Stu Peppard Arena as part of the Revised Capital Investment strategy.

Construction is scheduled to begin in the fall of 2024 and will be complete in the summer of 2027.

Design

The Glenmore Twin Arena will include:

  • Two ice rinks
  • Spectator seating
  • Team rooms and two tenant team rooms
  • Spectator concourse
  • Multipurpose room and classroom
  • Support spaces
  • Additional parking stalls

The design for the new arena will target a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold approach.

Benefit

Investment in public recreation infrastructure is important for promoting the local economy, fostering cultural vitality and encouraging healthy, active lifestyles.

The new Glenmore Twin Arena will increase the availability of ice surfaces in west Calgary, providing more space to practice and compete.

Once complete, the new arena will be an upgraded, modern facility with improved accessibility, capacity and energy efficiency.

Impact

Investment in this project will contribute $39 million to the GDP.

It will generate 277 full-time equivalent jobs during project design and delivery (based on Infrastructure Calgary’s economic impact assessment model).

Budget

The project is estimated at $85.6 million.

It is primarily funded by the Revised Capital Investment Strategy with other city funding sources, and with Hockey Calgary committing additional funds.

Timeline

  • January 2023 - spring 2024 - Design
  • Fall 2024 - Construction starts
  • Summer 2027 - Construction completion
