Kingsland Park

Phase 2 Engagement for the Kingsland Park Master Plan will take place in late Spring 2025. In Phase 2, we will share three concept options for park design, including future amenities, for public input. 

Thanks to everyone who participated in-person and online to share feedback on the Kingsland Summer Park pilot and the future of Kingsland Park. The What We Heard Report for our Phase 1 engagement period, which ran from Sept 16 - Oct 14, 2024, is available for viewing. The City continues to work with Kingsland Community Association on next steps for developing longer-term plans for the site and to secure funding for future park improvements.

In September 2024, The City informed the Kingsland Community Association of its decision to designate the former Kingsland School site as park space for the long term. There is no funding yet in place for future park improvements, but the community feedback received through our Phase 1 engagement is a first step that will be valuable in advocating for this project.

In summer 2024, The City built a temporary "pop-up" park in Kingsland, creating new spaces to play, socialize, relax, and gather in the community.

Kingsland Summer Park was a fun pilot project aimed at trying out and testing new ways of improving the use of public spaces in Calgary.

The Kingsland Summer Park project aligned with the core values of the Heritage Local Area Plan: "to enhance and improve civic facilities, parks, open spaces and natural areas."

It was funded by The City’s Parks Infrastructure Lifecycle Fund, offering an interim solution that provided access to public spaces that serve active and passive recreation needs for all ages, while enhancing the area’s environmental quality of life.

The Summer Park was available for public use from mid-July to October 2024.

It was located just south of the former Kingsland School site, at the corner of 5 Street and 75 Avenue S.W.

The location of the temporary Summer Park is marked in blue on the map above. The former school site has been fenced off and seeded. The grassy park area (in green on the map above) will continue to be used as a field for sports and play.

• Q2 2025: Phase 2 Public Engagement. 
• To Q4 2025: Former school site fencing will remain in place to isolate the seeded area during the 1-year landscaping warranty period.
• Q4 2024: School site remediation, regrading and seeding completed.
• Sept-Oct 2024: Phase 1 Public Engagement completed.
• July-Oct 2024: Kingsland Summer Park Pilot.

We will continue to work with the Community Association and residents near the project site, to understand priorities, to align this work with other City policies and plans, and to identify key considerations that meet community needs – today and in future.

The long-term vision is to develop a Master Plan for the Kingsland Park site. Funding is not yet in place for the longer-term project.

We want to understand community needs, wants, ideas, concerns, and feedback on this pilot park project.

There will be further opportunities to provide feedback on Kingsland Park in 2025, through a structured engagement process.

A master plan creates a long-term vision for a project that guides land use and infrastructure requirements to achieve a cohesive vision. It also helps to create a high-level costing of the project to inform future funding. The master plan typically includes:

• A description of how the land, amenities and facilities will be used and the best layout for development.
• A vision that aligns with City land use policies, requirements and other plans like the Local Area Plan.
• A conceptual design for integrating programs and services at the site.
