What you need to know Bearspaw South Feeder Main Update

What's happening

This year, The City is investing in critical work to improve the reliability of our water system that we all depend on.

This spring, we completed reinforcements to the current Bearspaw South Feeder Main to stabilize the most vulnerable areas to reduce the chances of another break until the new steel pipe is ready. The system is stable and the feeder main has returned to service, but at a reduced capacity. Thank you Calgary for your water saving efforts. All water restrictions have been lifted.

We’re also accelerating construction of a replacement for the Bearspaw South Feeder Main due to the critical condition of the current pipe and its importance in Calgary’s drinking water system. The replacement pipe is anticipated to be completed in December 2026.

What's coming up

Lawn and landscape watering schedule in effect

Calgary’s new, year-round lawn and landscape watering schedule sets regular days and times for outdoor watering across the city.

More flexible than outdoor water restrictions, it helps spread water use more evenly throughout the week, reducing high water use periods and easing pressure on our water system, which is especially important this summer while the Bearspaw South Feeder Main is operating at reduced capacity.

Bringing the new replacement feeder main online

This fall, there will also be another planned feeder main shutdown as we prepare to bring the new replacement pipe online.

Timelines for the planned shutdown have not yet been confirmed. As planning continues and schedules are finalized, we will share information with Calgarians as early as possible, so people have time to prepare.

Stay prepared for water restrictions

During the planned shutdown, or if another break happens at any time, we will once again need everyone’s help to save water.

Will The City open river water pickup stations for businesses if Stage 4 restrictions are needed this summer?

In the event of a water infrastructure failure that requires Stage 4 outdoor water restrictions this summer, The City has plans in place to support the community.

While restrictions are in effect, The City intends to open three river water pick‑up stations across the city to provide free, non-potable water for residents and businesses.

The City will work to set up these sites as quickly and safely as possible. Updates will be shared as locations and hours of operation are confirmed.
