Temporary Guest Wi-Fi accounts allow visitors and contractors to access the internet, from personal smartphones, laptops and tablets.

The minimum account length is one day; access granters can extend access for up to six additional days. When the activation period expires, visitors who want to continue using the service can request another temporary guest account.

Please note – If you receive a Guest Wi-Fi request from someone you don’t know, please reject the request.

Visitors and contractors can use Guest Wi-Fi:

  • To access the internet from a personal smartphone, laptop or tablet.
  • In boardrooms and areas where Guest Wi-Fi is enabled in supported City buildings.
  • When granted access by a City employee with a calgary.ca email address.

To connect to Guest Wi-Fi (COC-Guest), visitors should follow the step-by-step instructions:

The use of City operated Wi-Fi, including Guest Wi-Fi, is governed by Acceptable Use of Technology Policy.

In order to use The City of Calgary Guest Wi-Fi service, visitors will require a temporary account to sign in. Visitors will submit an account request to a City employee who will grant access to their guest account.

Visitors can follow the instructions for “How to request a temporary Guest Wi-Fi account” and “How to sign in to Guest Wi-Fi”.

How to request a temporary Guest Wi-Fi account

  1. Go to your mobile device’s settings menu.
  2. Select Wi-Fi from the list of menu options.
  3. Select the “COC-Guest” hotspot.
  4. You will be taken to the Guest Wi-Fi sign in page. If the page doesn’t load, open a new web browser and type in any URL (e.g. type www.calgaryca). You will be redirected to the Guest Wi-Fi sign in page
  5. Press the register button.
  6. A “Guest Wi-Fi registration page” will open; type in the complete email address of the City employee who is granting access to your temporary Guest Wi-Fi account.
  7. Enter the security code as shown in the image.
  8. Enter your name, phone number, company name and email into the contact information fields. Note: Your email address will become your username to sign in to Guest Wi-Fi.
  9. Create a password.
  10. Read and make sure you understand the terms of use, select the “I accept the terms of use” checkbox.
  11. Press the “register button”. 

Your request will be sent to the City employee you’ve identified as granting you access. The acess granter is responsible for approving or denying each request.

If your access granter approves your request, you will receive a visitor registration receipt. This receipt will confirm your length of access, your username and password.

How to sign in to Guest Wi-Fi

Once your Guest Wi-Fi account has been approved, the log in button is activated at the bottom of the visitor registration receipt webpage on your device. You can now sign in to Guest Wi-Fi.

  1. Go into your mobile device settings menu.
  2. Select Wi-Fi.
  3. Select “COC-Guest” from the list of available hotspots.
  4. A sign in webpage should appear. If the sign in page doesn’t load, open a new browser and type in the URL of any website (e.g. www.calgary.ca). You will be redirected to Guest Wi-Fi sign in page.
  5. Enter in your Guest Wi-Fi username and password, then press Log in.

You are now connected to Guest Wi-Fi. Once signed in, you can continue to use Guest Wi-Fi throughout the day in any City building that is Wi-Fi enabled

Tips to remember:

  • Request an account. Before signing in, visitors need to request a temporary Guest Wi-Fi account.  
  • Sign in each day. In order to keep the Wi-Fi service as secure as possible, please sign in on a smartphone or tablet, once a day. Note: selecting the Guest Wi-Fi hotspot without signing in does not mean you’re connected to The City’s Guest Wi-Fi.
  • Extend access. The minimum access length is one day. Access granters can approve an additional six days. Visitors can renew their access by submitting another request. For special cases, the access granter should contact the IT Help Desk.

City employees

City employees with a calgary.ca email address can grant access to a visitor or contractor request for a temporary Guest Wi-Fi account.

How to approve a Guest Wi-Fi account request

The Guest Wi-Fi request will be sent to your calgary.ca email address. You can also approve your own requests.

  1. Open the Guest Wi-Fi access request email.
  2. Set the guest account length using the “Account Expiration” drop-down menu. The default account length is one day. If you need extended access, you can add up to six additional days.
  3. Press confirm. You will see the approved registration receipt. 

Access Guest Wi-Fi using a personal device

City employees can register for a Guest Wi-Fi account using their personal smartphone or tablet. Follow the step-by-step instructions:

Employees are able to use Guest Wi-Fi (COC-Guest) by creating and granting access to their own temporary Guest Wi-Fi accounts. How to create a temporary Guest Wi-Fi account

  1. Open the settings menu on your device.
  2. Select Wi-Fi.
  3. Select the “COC-Guest” hotspot.

  10. Once you’ve read and understood the terms, select the “I accept the terms of use” checkbox.

A confirmation email will be sent to your calgary.ca email address when your visitor requests a temporary Guest Wi-Fi account.

  1. Confirm the guest request is valid.  
  2. Set the guest account length using the expiration time setting. 

How to approve a Guest Wi-Fi account

Let your visitor know their request for a Guest Wi-Fi account has been approved by one of two ways.

  1. Confirm your visitor received the account receipt with their username, password and account expiry date. 
    OR
  2. Confirm with your visitor that the log in button located on the registration receipt is activated.

Once the guest account is validated, visitors can start using the Guest Wi-Fi network.
