12 Avenue South Improvements

We're making changes to 12 Avenue South to make travelling better for all modes of transportation.

Key focus areas

12 Avenue South is a critical corridor for Calgarians who live, work and commute downtown. Construction will consist of new road markings and painted lines, updated signal work and the extension of the 12 Avenue cycle track.

Upgrades to 12 Avenue South will:

  • Improve travel time for drivers by providing three uninterrupted driving lanes for morning rush-hour.
  • Extend the dedicated lane for people cycling along 12 Avenue South.

Work on 12 Avenue South will be done in three phases:

Phase Scope Timeline
Phase one: road improvements Upgrade driving lanes along 12 Avenue South between 11 Street S.W. and 4 Street S.W. Summer 2019
Phase two: western extension Extend the cycle track west on 12 Avenue South from 11 Street S.W. to 16 Street S.W. Summer 2019

12 Ave S FAQ - Construction

Edit accordion

We anticipate that construction for the first two phases will begin in summer 2019 and carry into Fall 2019. Work is expected to take place during off-peak hours to try and minimize the impacts to residents and businesses in the area.

Construction for future phases of the 12 Avenue cycle track is tentatively scheduled for Summer 2020.

Edit accordion

The City's project management team will meet with individual property and business owners within the 2019 construction areas, prior to July.

Property and business owners will have at least a few weeks' notice of construction activities in front of their business.

The City's project team will also continue to be available to property and business owners in these areas during construction.

Edit accordion

12 Avenue South is expected to remain open for the duration of the project. Sections of the road may require resurfacing, resulting in the temporary closure of one or more lanes of traffic. If resurfacing occurs, traffic will be temporarily reduced to one lane during non-peak hours.

Some adjustments to parking will be made to allow for smooth and predictable traffic flow. We’re assessing parking-related impacts on a block-by-block basis. Lane configurations are being developed to mitigate the loss of on-street parking.
