About the job
As a Heavy Equipment Technician, you will inspect, maintain, and repair a wide variety of medium/heavy and/or diesel-powered trucks.
Primary duties include:
- Inspect, maintain, and repair a wide variety of medium/heavy and/or diesel-powered trucks, automatic transmissions, auxiliary mounted equipment, propane burner systems, trailers, and light/heavy construction equipment (examples include International, Freightliner, Kenworth, Ford, Caterpillar, John Deere, Bobcat, Kubota, and Toro).
- Perform Commercial Vehicle Inspections (CVIP), troubleshoot, repair, and overhaul various components of these vehicles.
- Provide technical training and guidance to apprentices and servicemen.
Qualifications:
- A High School diploma or equivalent (e.g., GED).
- A Heavy Equipment Technician certificate or equivalent Interprovincial Red Seal (as recognized by the Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training Board) is required.
- Truck and Transport and Off-Road certification.
- A valid Class 5 Driver's License (or provincial equivalent) with no more than 6 demerits and no current suspensions or charges pending.
- A Commercial Vehicle Inspection Program (CVIP) license to be completed within three months of hire and sign-off Government paperwork for CVIP vehicles is required.
- A valid Class 3 driver’s license (or provincial equivalent) with an air brake endorsement to be completed within three months of hire is required.
- The ability to use computerized laptop diagnostics programs.
- The ability to provide clear and concise work order job notes and reports of completed work.
- Applicants are required to have a standard set of mechanic hand tools.
- You have strong communication and relationship-building skills, along with sound judgment and high attention to detail.
- The ability to complete audiometric testing
Pay and Tool Allowances
Our Journeyman hourly wage ranges from $38.92 to $50.26* depending on pay grade and union agreements.
Tool allowances for Journeyman range from $450 to $681* annually depending on union agreements.
*These wages and tool allowances are subject to change based on union agreements. Amalgamated Transit Union Local 583 and Canadian Union of Public Employees Local 37)

Apprentice - Heavy Equipment Technician (HET)

About the job
Primary duties include:
- Work with a journeyperson technician performing planned maintenance work as well as diagnostics, troubleshooting, and repair of vehicles and equipment.
- Follow a preventative maintenance program on a large variety of equipment.
- Enter work order information into the fleet management system.
- Perform repairs on fleet equipment using a variety of hand tools, measuring instruments and software programs.
Qualifications:
- A High School diploma or equivalency (e.g. GED).
- Enrolled in a Heavy Equipment Technician Apprentice program as recognized by Apprenticeship and Industry Training (AIT), which includes Truck Transport or Off-Road certification.
- A valid Class 5 Driver's License (or provincial equivalent) with no more than 6 demerits and no current suspensions or charges pending.
- Ability to obtain a Commercial Vehicle Inspection Program (CVIP) license within three months of apprenticeship graduation and sign off Government paperwork for CVIP vehicles.
- A valid Class 3 Driver's License (or provincial equivalent) with an air brake endorsement (Q) to be completed within three months of hire.
- An original driver’s abstract no older than 60 days from all jurisdictions in which you have been a licensed driver in the past 2 years.
- Experience using computerized diagnostic programs and the ability to create clear and concise work order job notes and reports of completed work.
Pay and Tool Allowances
Our Apprentices hourly wage ranges from $31.58 to $46.24* depending on pay grade and union agreements.
Tool allowances for Apprentices range from $337 to $647* annually depending on union agreements.
