3. Find work-life balance.

  • We understand the importance of creating a sustainable way to work, while maintaining health and well-being.
  • The City of Calgary offers flexible work options, so you can find the balance you need, and create harmony between your work, and what is important to you outside of your job.
  • That creates a win-win because we know that offering flexible work options has a positive impact on productivity and employee health and wellness.
  • This flexibility, among other factors, has encouraged employees to stay with us for a long time: around 13 years of service on average.*
  • Flexible work arrangements include:**
    • Telework: is a form of remote work where employees work from their primary residence on certain workdays or portions of workdays, instead of from a corporate workspace. An employee’s primary residence must be within the Province of Alberta and within a reasonable distance from the City of Calgary. Number of days working from home is determined by the operational needs of a position and employee suitability.
    • Re-Arranged Work Week (RAWW): is a form of a compressed work week and is the default work schedule for most office-based positions at The City. Employees working this schedule average 35 hours per week over three weeks, earning one day off every three weeks.
    • Compressed Work Week (CWW): is an optional schedule which an employee applies for that allows them to work their position’s hours over fewer days, within a weekly or bi-weekly period (i.e. earning a day off every week or two weeks).
    • Part-time hours: allow for an employee to work fewer than the regular full-time hours for their position.
    • Job sharing: is a formal arrangement in which two permanent employees share the pay, allowances, and hours of a single full-time position, with each employee working a regular part-time schedule.

**Note: Eligibility is determined by role requirements and employee suitability.

Why move to Calgary?

We are often ranked as one of the world’s most livable cities. What does that mean to you? People who make Calgary their home love the shorter commutes between work and play destinations, a vibrant culinary scene, and more sunny days than any other municipality in Canada. All that sun makes our summers sweet and winters seem warmer, especially when our famous Chinook breezes find you in shirtsleeves on a November afternoon. And our proximity to the beautiful Rocky Mountains means you can have a fine balance of good city life, and the very best that nature has to offer.

Come to Calgary to live and work, and you’ll find Calgarians are:

  • Welcoming, diverse and inclusive
Calgary was the first municipality in Canada to elect a Muslim mayor, and today, six out of ten Calgarians are either first or second-generation immigrants.
  • Empathetic
Calgary has a strong community spirit with more volunteers per capita than any other Canadian city. It also ranks in third place as one of the most charitable cities across the country.
  • Environmentally conscious
Calgary has consistently ranked as one of the cleanest cities in the world, running its entire CTrain system and city operations on 100% renewable energy.
  • Innovative, prosperous and diversified
