Community signs
Who is responsible for maintaining these signs?
Signs on private property
Community entrance signs are often constructed as part of a property or developer fence near the main street entrance and are the sole responsibility of that property owner to maintain. In some cases, there may be a Homeowner’s Association or Resident’s Association that would repair or refresh these signs. If you have concerns about the condition of such a sign, check with that association.
Signs on public property
The City inspected all signs on public property in 2024 and rated them on their physical condition. Most of the inspected signs were found to be in fair or good condition (90 per cent). Signs that had structural issues or could pose a future safety risk were identified and will be removed.
While there are a handful of entrance signs or features on public lands that have an active maintenance agreement in place, the responsibility for all others falls to The City. This scenario represents most of the signs installed prior to 2015.
When these signs deteriorate over time, The City removes the sign and repairs the surface of the public land. The City does not provide a repair or maintenance service for these signs and features.
The exception is damage caused by a vehicle collision.
Frequently asked questions
Can residents repaint or refresh a community sign on public property?
No, as the sign is on public property, individual residents are not permitted to repair or refresh the sign. The City will work with Community Associations to repair or refresh a sign through accommodating safe access, should the Community Association have the capacity to take on the repair.
My community doesn’t have a sign. Can we have one?
We suggest you work with your Community Association as it would be responsible for the sign. The CA would contact the Neighbourhood Partnership Coordinator to determine what the next steps would be, as the process can vary depending on the proposed location of the sign.
