An update on the critical water situation

June 7 update

Water restrictions remain in place, and the Boil Water Advisory remains in place for Bowness on Friday

Yesterday Calgary saw a significant reduction in water use until the afternoon; however, water use greatly increased around the time people got home from work. Calgary is currently using more water than it can produce.

If Calgarians do not reduce our water use, we are at risk of running out. The City is asking Calgarians to save water for the next few days while the work gets completed.

Today we’re asking citizens to try to use 25% less water than yesterday. This could mean actions like shaving a few minutes off your shower, skipping a few flushes, and holding off on a load of laundry.

Thank you, Bowness ❤️

As we head into the evening, I want to thank Bowness residents for their resilience today. It was a long day and a big day, and I am thankful to everyone who rallied together to share information, provide water, and support each other.

My team and I spent today in the community answering questions, sharing updates, and delivering water. Thank you to everyone for maintaining the strong community spirit that makes Bowness so great.

We found out this afternoon that the water main break is located at The Bearspaw South Feeder feedermain, which is a large artery in the City's water system. It is considered the most critical feedermain in Calgary's water network.

Please read below for important information as we head into the evening:

There are 9 emergency water wagon locations for Bowness:

  • Bowness Community Association (4527 77 ST NW)
  • Bow Crest Nursing Home (5927 Bowness RD NW)
  • Our Lady of Assumption School (7311 34 AV NW)
  • On 85 ST beside Belvedere Parkway School (4631 85 ST NW)
  • Bow Centre Seniors Home (7915 43 AV NW)
  • James Shouldice Manor (2003 46 ST NW)
  • 82 Juniper DR NW Greenwood Village
  • Bow View Manor Nursing Home (4628 Montgomery BV NW)
  • Beside Bowness Car Wash (6540 Bowness Rd NW on 65 ST NW)

🔥The Chief of the Calgary Fire Department has introduced a city wide fire ban, including personal fire pits, recreational campfires, open flame devices, and pits at Calgary Parks. This is necessary to ensure fire safety in a time of critical water usage. CFD also wants to remind Calgarians to be mindful of fire hazards during this time. Please take extra caution when cooking.

🚰 The crews are focused on repair and public safety is the first priority. After that, a full and thorough investigation will be done to determine the cause of the water main break and shared with Calgarians.

🚱 AHS still has an active Boil Water Advisory for Bowness. Residents should bring water to a rolling boil before any consumption. Calgarians are encouraged to call 311 if they notice any concerns or issues with their water.

⏰ Crews are working 24/7 on site. There is around the clock digging to remove water and debris in order to identify the break. Once that is discovered, the repair will begin. All of the parts are available for as soon as the root cause has been found. At that time, there will be a more accurate repair schedule.

💧 Calgarians are being asked to limit or delay their water usage. Small changes can make a large impact, and it is important for all Calgarians to reassess water usage and habits. Consider shorter showers, less dishes, turning off ice makers, diffusers and humidifiers, and not to leave taps running.

🌱 Stage 4 outdoor water restrictions are in effect. Calgarians must stop all outdoor water use immediately, to help reduce demand for water. These restrictions are temporary, but critical. Violations of these restrictions may lead to fines.

⚾️ City facilities are impacted with disruptions and closures. All City-operated aquatic & fitness facilities are closed. All arenas are closed. Athletic Parks are open, but no showers are available. Other private facilities are adjusting their operations accordingly.

🚨 This is a good reminder for all Calgarians on the importance of a 72-hour emergency preparedness kit.

Updates will continue to come through the Ward 1 social media channels and newsletters. Please also refer to calgary.ca/wateroutages for more information.
