Welcome
Please welcome Jennifer Atkinson to the Ward 1 Team as the Communications and Policy Lead!
Jennifer Atkinson is thrilled to be joining the Ward 1 team as our Communications and Policy Leader. She brings 17 years of experience in the public and non-profit sectors, including almost 10 years in The City of Calgary Administration. Construction underway for Rocky Ridge Athletic Park
The Ward 1 Office has heard from residents with questions and concerns about recent construction activity in the Rocky Ridge YMCA area. We’re happy to share that this is due to the exciting development of the new Rocky Ridge Athletic Park, which officially broke ground in September 2024.
This new park will include two multi-use artificial turf fields, along with essential amenities such as parking, washrooms, and field lighting.
These additions will provide much-needed space for sports and recreation, addressing the growing demand for year-round activities in Ward 1. Access to the park will be managed through The City’s booking system, ensuring fair access for all.
The anticipated project completion is spring/summer 2026. Stay tuned for more updates as this exciting project progresses! For more information, visit Rocky Ridge Athletic Complex (calgary.ca).
Listen to Councillor Sharp’s recent podcast interview for a deeper look into her values and vision for Ward 1
This summer, Councillor Sharp had the pleasure of sitting down with Ward 1 resident Christina Pilarski, the inspiring woman behind Two Babies and a Business. On her podcast, Councillor Sharp shared her journey from business ownership to public service, and what led her to being your Ward 1 City Councillor. They also discussed the realities of balancing work and life, debunking the myth of perfection, and the importance of asking for help along the way.

Debunking the Pressure to be Perfect
Upcoming open house: TransCanada Sanitary Trunk Project
The City of Calgary is hosting an open house on October 28th at Crestmont Hall from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. This event will be particularly important for residents of Valley Ridge and Bowdale Crescent, as they will be most affected by the TransCanada Sanitary Trunk Project.
Project overview: The TransCanada Sanitary Trunk is an 8.5-kilometer sewage trunk designed to efficiently manage wastewater from the west side of Calgary and the Town of Cochrane. With the population in these areas continuing to grow, the existing Valley Ridge Sanitary Sewage Trunk is reaching its capacity. This project aims to ensure that our infrastructure meets the increasing demands for sewage management.
Construction timeline: Construction is scheduled to begin in March 2025, with the sanitary trunk expected to be operational by December 2026. Landscaping and other final touches will be completed by September 2027, allowing for the infrastructure to blend into the community.
Impact: Residents can anticipate some noise, vibration, dust, and road detours during the construction period. However, to minimizing disruption, the project will primarily use microtunneling, a construction method that creates underground tunnels to reduce environmental, health, and traffic impacts. Approximately 5 kilometers of the trunk will be built using this method, while the remaining 3.5 kilometers will involve open-trench construction.
Residents are encouraged to attend the open house to engage with project representatives, ask questions, and express their feedback. This is a valuable opportunity to learn more about the TransCanada Sanitary Trunk Project and its significance for the community.
40 Years of BIAs: how the Mainstreet Bowness BIA keeps the community thriving
This year marks the 40th anniversary of Calgary’s Business Improvement Areas (BIAs), which play a key role in supporting Calgary's local businesses. During BIA Week, held from October 8–14, Councillor Sharp highlighted the contributions of the Mainstreet Bowness BIA and its current Director, Jacqui Esler, who continues to build on the BIA’s efforts to strengthen the business community in Bowness.
Councillor Sharp, having grown up in an entrepreneurial family and owned a small business herself, has a personal connection to supporting small businesses. Reflecting on the work of the Mainstreet Bowness BIA, she noted how it has brought the community together through events and beautification projects that keep Bowness vibrant!
Valley Ridge Lift Station upgrades
The Valley Ridge sanitary lift station, located on the Valley Ridge Golf Club property, is set to undergo important upgrades starting the week of October 21, 2024. These improvements are necessary to address safety concerns and ensure continued reliable operation. The work will focus on installing protective guardrails, improved hazardous gas detection systems, and updated equipment for safely managing the station’s pumps.
The project is expected to take approximately 10 weeks, with work occurring Monday to Friday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. The community may experience increased traffic, occasional noise, dust, and temporary odours. However, there will be no disruption to water or sanitary services.
If you have any questions or concerns, please contact 311 or the Ward 1 Office.
Updates to City Services
City Building - Zoning Bylaw
The City is updating plans that will shape the future of Calgary to ensure our city keeps being a great place to live and thrive. The City Building Program is planning for the future of how we move, build, and use land across the city.
The new Zoning Bylaw will be an important tool for building the vision set out in the Calgary Plan and simplify rules that guide the use of land and form of buildings in the city. Councillor Sharp believes we need smart and respectful growth that considers community character and citizen input.
Visit calgary.ca/citybuilding to share your ideas about the Zoning Bylaw by Oct. 20, 2024.
Fire Prevention Week
Fire Prevention Week 2024, which ran from October 6 to 12, focused on the importance of having working smoke alarms in every home. On October 8, Kyrie Rajic, age 9, was named Junior Fire Chief in a ceremony held at the Tuscany Fire Station—right here in Ward 1.
Although Fire Prevention Week has ended, Councillor Sharp encourages residents to remain vigilant about fire safety throughout the year. The Calgary Fire Department reports that a functioning smoke alarm reduces the risk of death in a house fire by more than half. Unfortunately, many fire-related fatalities occur in homes without working alarms.
In case of a fire, you’ll have less than two minutes to escape. To stay protected, remember to:
- Install smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside each sleeping area, and on every level of your home, including the basement.
- Test your smoke alarms monthly and replace the batteries at least once a year.
- Replace smoke alarms every 10 years or if they fail to work when tested.
Staying proactive with these simple steps can make all the difference in keeping your family safe year-round.

Provincial Bow River Reservoir Options project advances: relocated Ghost Dam to enter Phase 3
The Province of Alberta has announced that the Relocated Ghost Dam option will advance to Phase 3 of the Bow River Reservoir Options project. This decision, made on September 25, 2024, follows a review of multiple potential reservoir sites. The Relocated Ghost Dam option was chosen due to its smaller project footprint, fewer environmental and property impacts, and comparable water storage capabilities compared to the previously considered Glenbow East Reservoir option.
This marks a significant step forward for Calgary and the surrounding region. The additional water storage will improve drought resilience, reduce flood risk, and increase operational flexibility within the Bow River Basin, supporting long-term environmental sustainability. Phase 3 of the project, led by the Ministry of Transportation and Economic Corridors, will focus on engineering and design, regulatory approvals, land acquisition, and ongoing community engagement. For more information and updates about the project, visit alberta.ca/bow-river-reservoir-options.
