Strengthening Transparency: Improving Engagement with Calgarians
Notice of Motion
On October 29, 2024, Councillor Sharp, alongside Councillors Wong and Chabot, successfully brought forward a Notice of Motion titled Strengthening Transparency: Improving Engagement with Calgarians, which was unanimously passed by Council. This initiative is set to advance how the City engages with residents, aiming for a more transparent and accountable feedback process.
The value of community feedback
Councillor Sharp acknowledges that while engagement feedback may not capture every resident’s perspective, it represents an important part of community input. Those who take the time to share their views are invested in Calgary’s future and the wellbeing of their neighbourhoods. This motion aims to honour and amplify those voices, ensuring they are meaningfully considered in city decision-making.
"Engagement needs to have a stronger role in the recommendations brought to Council. It’s not just about how we do engagement; it’s about truly listening and incorporating community feedback into our decisions. I believe we can always do better, and this motion is about making sure we’re doing our jobs—helping us make better decisions by really listening to Calgarians."
- Councillor Sonya Sharp
Addressing gaps in the current engagement process
The current engagement framework lacks consistency, particularly in how resident feedback is integrated into Council decisions. The Strengthening Transparency motion proposes adopting best practices to create a more reliable process where resident input is transparently woven into the City’s work. Through these improvements, Council hopes to foster greater accountability and clarity for residents.
Next steps
Before the motion can be fully implemented, it requires a review during the upcoming budget deliberations. At that time, Council will assess the budgetary needs associated with putting these engagement improvements into action.
Furthermore, Administration has been directed to provide an update to City Council through the Executive Committee by Q2 2025, outlining progress and any additional steps needed to achieve these engagement improvements.
