Travel Safe Student Video Contest Returns for 2025

Calling all filmmakers! Put on your director’s hat, grab your camera and help make our city’s streets safer for everyone. We’re excited to share that the City of Calgary’s Travel Safe Student Video Contest is back for another year. This contest invites all Calgary students in Kindergarten through Grade 12 to create short, original videos that promote safety while traveling on city streets, sidewalks, and pathways.

Run by the City of Calgary, with support from the Calgary Police Service and Calgary Public Library, the contest aims to inspire students to think about how they move through their communities, while also offering a fun and creative way to share important safety messages with their peers.

Why this contest matters:

The Travel Safe Student Video Contest is about more than just videos. It helps:

  • Increase understanding of traffic safety rules
  • Encourage young people to share their voices and concerns about traffic safety
  • Provide trusted and age-appropriate information about safe travel
  • Promote conversations between children and caregivers about safe behaviours
  • Help students feel confident navigating streets and sidewalks safely on their own
  • Create opportunities for peer-to-peer learning through student creativity and storytelling

Contest details:

  • Open to Calgary students in Grades K–12
  • Deadline to submit is April 30, 2025
  • Finalist videos will be celebrated at a public screening event on Wednesday, May 14, 2025, from 7 to 8 p.m. at the Central Library
  • Family, friends, and members of the community are encouraged to attend the screening event

This contest is a valuable opportunity for students to connect their everyday experiences with a broader message of safety and care for one another on Calgary’s streets and pathways.
