City Makes Moves to Create Housing for Families in Need

The City of Calgary is moving quickly to address the housing crisis by dedicating two City-owned sites to develop housing to support families with children who are at risk of or experiencing homelessness, as part of The City’s Housing Strategy. The City of Calgary has released an Expression of Interest open to all qualified non-profit organizations with experience developing and operating non-market housing.

“With the approval of the Housing Strategy this year, we committed to take immediate and longer-term actions to ensure Calgarians have access to safe housing they can afford," says Mayor Gondek. "The release of these two city land sites to rapidly create homes for families in precarious situations will allow for housing with dignity in a completely overloaded system."

Making use of City-owned sites for temporary housing is a way Calgary can move quickly on supporting non-market homes and affordability. The City-owned sites for housing are both located in the vicinity of LRT facilities - one in the north adjacent to the Whitehorn LRT, and the other in the south near Fish Creek-Lacombe LRT.

“The City has strong housing partners that have a far reach and impact in our community. This Expression of Interest is an important first step in working with and enabling our partners to establish housing for families experiencing homelessness. We’re pleased to be able to release this Expression of Interest today as we begin to implement the housing strategy,” says Tim Ward, Manager of Housing Solutions.

The City of Calgary’s Housing Strategy contains 98 actions that address the housing crisis, creating more homes in all shapes and sizes in all neighbourhoods to ensure every Calgarian has an affordable place to call home.

The Expression of Interest closes on January 15, 2024. Once housing provider partners are selected through this process, The City will negotiate a lease agreement and support those partners to deliver housing on the sites.
