This Is My City
This is My City (TMC) provides Calgary's homeless community with increased opportunities for creative expression while engaging Calgarians in a dialogue about the issues around homelessness, and the place of art and culture in society.
In January 2008, TMC was initiated by The City's division of Arts & Culture to build, through a team-based approach, an on-going program that would see homeless citizens engaged in art-making.
In January 2010, the involved artist team developed an independent not-for-profit society that works to continue the powerful work begun by The City.
TMC has continued programs with the Calgary Drop-In & Rehab Centre, The Mustard Seed, the Calgary Homeless Foundation, the Calgary Women's Centre, The Salvation Army, Inn from the Cold, Avenue 15, Feed the Hungry and the Boys & Girls Club of Calgary.
These programs include poetry, fiction, performance, personal narrative, street reportage, drawing, painting, installation, printmaking, sculpture, photography and video, and have allowed over 1000 individuals to express their life experiences through art. The artworks have been exhibited in places such as One Yellow Rabbit's High Performance Rodeo, The Glenbow Museum, The University of Calgary, the Municipal Atrium, Art Central, and the EPCOR Centre for the Performing Arts.
