Frequently asked questions

Are people being accommodated at group lodging or at hotels?

Our current strategy is to work with our hotel partners to accommodate people and their pets in hotels first, but should the need arise, we would open general group lodging at a community facility.

Do you need to be an Alberta/Jasper resident to receive lodging if evacuating from Jasper?

No, you do not need to be a resident of Jasper or Alberta to receive lodging as an evacuee. We know there are many people in the Jasper area who are visitors or there temporarily and we are welcoming all evacuees and their pets who need support.

How long will the Calgary reception centre be set up for?

The situation is very dynamic, so we’re prepared to adapt as needed. The reception centre is open this week and we’ll work with our provincial partners to adjust as needed.

What will this cost and who covers that cost?

It’s too early to tell the full cost of Calgary’s support but we are working on estimates as the situation develops. Costs of the reception centres will be reimbursed by the Government of Alberta and The City doesn’t expect to incur out-of-pocket costs.

Why activate the Municipal Emergency Plan in Calgary if this emergency isn’t within our jurisdiction?

Activating the Municipal Emergency Plan allows the Calgary Emergency Management Agency to access resources from across The City as well as from its many agency partners. It also allows us to coordinate communications.

If there is any risk of fire in areas around Calgary?

Currently, there is no fire ban in place within Calgary city limits. Please continue to be mindful of the fire bans throughout the province and practice caution when participating in outdoor fire pits, discarding of cigarettes, and working with fire of any kind.

Where can people donate, volunteer or support evacuees?

Please do not bring any donations to the reception centre in Calgary. We are not set up to take donations, or to get them to those who could benefit. We also do not require volunteers, but we thank you for the offers of support.

Any companies, individuals or organizations that would like to offer support to those impacted by the wildfires, can email their offers to EmergencySupportOffers@gov.ab.ca.

Can I offer my house as an accommodation?

We thank Calgarians and others who are generously seeking to help the Jasper wildfire evacuees. Currently, we have enough lodging available for evacuees at area hotels. Any companies, individuals or organizations that would like to offer support to those impacted by the wildfires, can email their offers to EmergencySupportOffers@gov.ab.ca.
