Calgary’s Summer Festival Season is in full swing! Downtown is where you’ll find the electric energy as people unite to celebrate community, creativity, and culture. With over 100 festivals and events happening downtown this summer, the heart of our city will be bursting with fun and entertainment for everyone.

Festivals & events are generally approved to proceed, as long as they adhere to water restrictions currently in place. Please check the events website for any updates.

FEATURED EVENT


Xiang Long Chinese Dragon Festival

This event will focus on delivering live cultural performances including lion and dragon dances, multicultural artists, a local vendors marketplace, and various family-oriented activities. We will also host a special dragon walk, to connect the community together with this unique mythical creature.

2024 Honens Festival – 176 Keys

When: September 6

2022 Honens Prize Laureate Illia Ovcharenko and Honens Artistic Director Jon Kimura Parker are joined by Alberta’s own virtuoso pianists Carmen Morin and Zhenni Li-Cohen in this annual favourite, where you will hear some of some of the most fun, exciting, and upbeat repertoire classical piano has to offer. Piano students from University of Calgary’s School of Creative and Performing Arts and the Mount Royal University Conservatory will open the concert with party pieces of their own.  

2024 Honens Festival – Illia Ovcharenko in Recital: Beethoven Three Ways

When: September 6

Highlighting this year’s Honens Festival is a solo recital by 2022 Honens Prize Laureate Illia Ovcharenko. Illia is taking the world by storm with a fast-growing list of accolades. Illia’s program is centred on Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7, particularly the second movement.

2024 Honens Festival – Bison Noir: Centenary in Blue

When: September 6

Put away classical music concert traditions, pull up a chair, and enjoy a beer and some nosh, while award-winning wind quintet WindSync and Honens Artistic Director Jon Kimura Parker take you out for a night in Birdland with a Jazz Age inspired program. With a mix of jazz, blues, and contemporary, all performed by Jackie Parker and the vibrant and versatile musicians of WindSync, this edition of Bison Noir is one you won’t soon forget. This event is 18+

2024 Honens Festival – Classical Adaptations

When: September 7

Join WindSync for a family-friendly concert in an adaptive atmosphere. This event has been specially designed to be accessible and inclusive for young audiences, neurodivergent listeners, people with disabilities, and others who face social and systemic barriers to attending typical events. All ages and expressions are welcome!

2024 Honens Festival – Open Air Calgary

When: September 7

Pianists Jon Kimura Parker, Illia Ovcharenko, and Zhenni Li-Cohen, along with the flute, clarinet, oboe, bassoon, and horn players of WindSync will blow you away with their harmonious sounds for families, children, couples, and music enthusiasts alike. Bring your picnic blanket and soak up the final days of the summer sun in this celebration of togetherness, arts and culture, and the simple joy of spending time outdoors. Open Air Calgary @ Central Memorial Park is a reminder of the magic that live music brings.

Beat Beethoven

When: September 8

Enjoy “Beat Beethoven," a pathway run in East Village, featuring 4 km or 8 km loops starting and finishing at Riverwalk Plaza. Runners can challenge themselves to complete the 8 km before the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra finishes playing Beethoven's best music, followed by a post-race festival area with food, drinks, and a second performance by Calgary Phil. 

Calgary Corporate Challenge 2024 September Games 5 km and 10 km

When: September 8

Where: Daqing Square

The CCC 5 km and 10 km races are 2 of 22 events that occur annually during the September Games lineup! With 100 energetic volunteers ensuring a safe and exciting race, it's bound to be a day of adrenaline and fun for all!

Party in the Park

When: September 8

Where: Lougheed House

A family friendly one day festival featuring live music, games, beer gardens and food trucks in Lougheed House's greenspace. This event is free, all ages and dog friendly!

Calgary Fallen Firefighters Memorial

When: September 13

This annual public event honours the sacrifice of Calgary's fallen firefighters and their families. All are welcome to participate in this inclusive and meaningful event.
