Tennis and pickleball courts

The City owns and operates over 160 outdoor tennis courts throughout Calgary. Most of these courts have been adapted for users to play either tennis or pickleball.

During the shoulder seasons—spring and fall—we kindly ask for your understanding as the tennis courts remain closed. The shoulder seasons bring unpredictable weather and temperature fluctuations, which can compromise the integrity of the court surface. This temporary closure is necessary to preserve the courts' condition and ensure they are safe and ready for use in the coming months.

Why the Courts Remain Closed During the Spring & Fall

  1. Maintenance and Repairs
The shoulder seasons provides an ideal window for conducting necessary maintenance and repairs. This can include sweeping and washing the courts, fixing cracks, and ensuring the nets and fencing are in good condition. Regular upkeep during this period helps prevent more significant issues that could arise during peak usage times.
  2. Weather Conditions
The unpredictable weather during the shoulder seasons, including potential frost, rain, and fluctuating temperatures, can negatively affect the court surfaces. Keeping the courts during this time prevents damage caused by these conditions, ensuring the courts remain safe and playable when reopened.
  3. Safety Concerns
Wet or icy surfaces can be hazardous for players, increasing the risk of slips and falls. By closing the courts during the shoulder seasons, we prioritize the safety of our community members and reduce the likelihood of injuries.
  4. Cost Efficiency
Performing maintenance and repairs during the shoulder seasons is more cost-effective than addressing emergency repairs during peak season. This proactive approach helps manage budget allocations more efficiently and ensures the courts are in top condition for high-demand periods.
  5. Environmental Impact
Closing the courts during the shoulder season reduces the environmental impact associated with frequent unpredictable weather-related openings and closures. It allows for a period of rest, contributing to the sustainability of our facilities.

Closing the tennis courts during the spring and fall allows us to perform essential maintenance and repairs, protect the surface from weather-related damage, and ensure user safety.

We appreciate your understanding and cooperation as we work to maintain safe, high-quality courts for the community.

Most City-owned courts are fenced and are locked during the off-season.
