Change to public access

To protect the safety of people, pets and our wastewater infrastructure, starting December 2023, only authorized personnel are permitted on Pine Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant property.

In the fall 2024, The City will install a fence around the perimeter of the property, restricting public access.

Background

The green space around the plant has long been used as an unauthorized off-leash area, however it contains wastewater infrastructure and was never intended for recreational use.

Over the years, the growth of the surrounding communities has led to an increase in pedestrian and vehicle traffic around the plant site, and a corresponding increase in risk to the safety of plant staff, citizens and their pets, and damage to infrastructure.

We anticipate this risk will grow with the continued development in the area, and upcoming construction to 210 Avenue S.E. that is expected in 2024.

Nearby options for recreation

  • There is a dedicated off-leash area in neighbouring Wolf Willow, less than a 10-minute drive away.
  • The City has over 157 public off-leash areas for you and your dog to enjoy.
  • The unmaintained trails and safe river access points along the Bow River, east of the plant will remain open. Access this area through the community of Wolf Willow, north of the plant property.
