Project update

The new intersection is open. The City will continue with interchange plans when funding becomes available.

Study overview

In the late 1970s, City Council approved a functional planning study for the Trans-Canada Highway (16th Avenue N.E) on the east side of Calgary. This study confirmed that a partial interchange with access to/from the west only would ultimately be constructed at 16th Avenue and 68th Street N.E.

In 2004, Alberta Transportation conducted a new functional planning study for the northeast leg of the Ring Road, called Northeast Stoney Trail. This study confirmed the need for a major interchange with directional ramps at 16th Avenue N.E. and Northeast Stoney Trail. This project is not currently funded on The City's Investing in Mobility plan, there is not a timeframe for construction.

The Northeast Stoney Trail planning study stimulated renewed community interest in revisiting the approved plan for the interchange at 16th Avenue and 68th Street N.E. The City of Calgary evaluated interchange concepts that would provide more connectivity to 68th Street N.E.
