Providence storm water and outfall project

Providence Storm Water and Outfall Project

About the project

The City of Calgary is building new stormwater infrastructure on the southwest edge of Calgary to accommodate new development in the area. The Providence Storm Trunk is a 3.6 kilometre system that will transport treated stormwater from the new community of Alpine Park to Fish Creek, servicing approximately 900 hectares of development.

The project is part of the New Community Growth Strategy which includes the Providence ASP Lands. Most of the work will occur within the Transportation Utility Corridor (TUC) which is an undeveloped section of land designated for infrastructure and utilities. By working within the TUC, we reduce the impact to residents and traffic in the area.

Construction is taking place in three stages and began in June 2022 with completion of stage 2 expected in October 2024. The first stage constructs the trunk from 146 Ave S.W. just west of Stoney Trail north to Fish Creek Park. The second stage constructs the trunk from 154 Ave S.W. to 162 Ave S.W. Details of the third stage are pending and are dependent on planned future development.

We have been working with citizens, community groups, and stakeholders, so that all parties understand the scope of work required to complete this project.

Project status – July, 2024

Stage 2 construction is in progress and ends in October 2024. Construction of the trunk is taking place south of Fish Creek to 162 Avenue S.W. where it will connect to a manhole located at the east boundary of the Alpine Park development.

Construction impacts:

  • Construction will take place within the Stoney Trail right of way.
  • We will be microtunnelling under 154 Avenue to avoid traffic disruptions.
  • The following impacts may be experienced:
    • Dust and noise.
    • Increased construction traffic. Work is to occur 5-6 days a week.
  • We will be monitoring for noise and vibration.

Project benefits

  • The project is part of the New Community Growth Strategy enabling us to make our city an attractive place for people to want to live and make a great life. This project complements city-wide goals and objectives for growth and development.
  • Most of the work will occur within the Transportation Utility Corridor (TUC), which reduces the impact to residents and traffic in the area.
  • We will be microtunnelling, which is essentially installing utilities via a underground tunnel to avoid traffic and greenspace disturbances, under 154 Avenue.
