Review of exempt positions
Tell me more
We are conducting a review of our exempt positions to modernize their related compensation program. When complete, we will have a new career framework and salary structure for exempt jobs. As part of this, each exempt position is being reviewed.
Overall, the review of exempt positions will ensure:
- Our exempt compensation program, policies, and practices are modernized and market-competitive.
- All positions align with the Alberta Labour Relations Board exemption criteria, which are outlined in the Board’s Bulletin #22.
Frequently asked questions
How will a review affect the exempt position for which I’m applying?
Applicants should be aware that the union jurisdiction and/or salary range noted in the exempt job posting may change when the results are implemented in mid-2025.
What does it mean that the union jurisdiction might change?
A jurisdictional change occurs when it is determined that an exempt position, or a group of exempt positions, don’t meet the Alberta Labour Relations Board (ALRB) criteria to remain exempt. As a result, the position(s) must be transferred into the applicable union jurisdiction.
How will this affect my salary if I’m offered the position?
Please be assured that the intention of this project is not to reduce our employee’s base salaries. You will be offered a salary in the salary range noted in the exempt job posting until the review is complete.
New salary structures will be developed as part of this project and exempt employees will be placed in the revised structure accordingly. If your salary exceeds the new range maximum you would receive salary protection in alignment with our HR policy.
If the position is transferred into a union jurisdiction, salary protection is one of the terms negotiated with the union. This negotiation would occur before employees are transferred.
Where can I find more information?
If you are successful in securing an exempt position, you would gain more information on the review as an employee. Any changes to your position or compensation would be communicated to you and your leader before being actioned.
If you have questions about this review and how it may affect the job you are applying for, please ask your hiring manager during the interview process.
We appreciate your patience as we work toward improving our compensation programs. We believe these changes will make working with us even better in the future.
