Green
Green bins are for food scraps and yard waste.
Mix ups
When food scraps or yard waste are buried in the landfill they don’t break down or turn into soil.
The bones in this picture were dug up after 40+ years buried in a city landfill.
Put all food scraps in your green bin.
Mess ups
Spoiled food in their plastic containers are often found in the green bins.
Plastic packaging in green bins can ruin the finished compost.
Take all scraps and or spoiled food out of their plastic packaging before composting.
Blue
Your blue bin is for acceptable household paper, cardboard and container packaging.
Mix ups
Household goods, even if they are metal or have a recycling symbol don’t go in your blue cart.
Metal pans, jam up equipment and rip apart conveyor belts.
Garden hoses, electrical cords get tangled up around the other recyclables and create giant tangled messes.
They stop the sorting process entirely and create costly delays.
Mess ups
Food packaging designed to keep items fresh and affordable is aways evolving,
Many of these clever wrappers are made from multiple layers of plastics, foils and sometimes paper, packaging like this is not compatible with our recycling system in Calgary.
Items like fruit pouches, chip bags and granola bar wrappers should be placed in the black bin.
Black
Your old and broken items don’t always have to end up in the black bin!
The City offers a range of programs and services to help divert waste from our landfills and give items a second life.
Mix ups
Items like clothing, paint cans, and electronics can be taken to City Eco Centres for proper disposal and recycling.
Mess ups
Putting electronics or batteries in any of your bins can cause fires when they’re compacted by trucks or equipment.
Take electronics and batteries to a City Eco Centre and or recycle batteries for free at participating retailers.
