Continuous emissions monitoring

A City of Calgary Living Lab in progress

What’s being tested

Through the Living Labs program, Qube Technologies, a company based in Calgary, is currently testing their continuous emissions monitoring and detection solution at the former Springbank Landfill site. This project is being conducted in collaboration with The City of Calgary’s Waste and Recycling Services.

This is the second test at this site, following an initial test conducted in 2022.

How will the technology be tested?

During the test, Qube will use IoT (Internet of Things) sensors, which are small devices that send sensor data over the Internet. These sensors will be se tup along the outside edge of the landfill to collect emissions data. The continuous data collected will be analyzed and monitored for greenhouse gases like methane. This data will help improve Qube’s artificial intelligence (AI) models for detecting and locating emissions in landfill settings.

Data collection and privacy

Qube Technologies is using their sensors to continuously monitor air quality at the former Springbank Landfill site. These sensors collect data on various emissions, including methane, other greenhouse gases, particulate matter, volatile organic compounds (VOC), and micrometeorology. The purpose of this data collection is to improve Qube’s AI technology for detecting and locating emissions. The data will help Qube refine their models and make their system more effective. It is important to note that only environmental data will be collected during this test. No personal information will be collected.

How is this a Living Lab?

Through the Living Labs program, Qube Technologies is testing their solution by setting up monitors and collecting emissions data at the former Springbank Landfill site. This initiative helps Qube collect real-world data which will be used to refine their technology and improve its effectiveness.

About Qube

Qube Technologies builds devices that detect methane and other emissions right where they are released. Their system uses artificial intelligence to tell operators how much gas is present and where it is coming from. This real-time information helps companies find and fix leaks faster, preventing greenhouse gases from entering the atmosphere.
