Smart parking test with Parquery at Lot 25
What’s being tested
Parquery is testing their AI Smart Parking technology at Calgary Parking Lot 25 (221 – 9 Ave. S.W.) to show available parking spaces in real time. This is part of the Living Labs program and is done in partnership with Calgary Parking.

When is this Living Lab in action?
Parquery will test their technology at Calgary Parking Lot 25 (221 - 9 Ave. S.W.) starting in November 2024 until the end of February 2025.
How will the technology be tested?
Parquery takes pictures of parking stalls using any camera, even cameras already installed. Their software uses AI and machine learning to analyze images and give parking managers real-time information about parking occupancy.
A CCTV camera will be installed at Lot 25 for the test. The test has two phases:
- A one-month setup to train the software for Calgary’s weather.
- A three-month phase to deliver results to The City of Calgary and adjust the software for winter weather if needed.
Fig. 1. Neighboring areas not essential to the smart parking service are masked and blurred, e.g., the platform upper edge of the image. The camera image is low quality, so it does not allow number plates and faces to be recognized.
How will data be collected?
The cameras take de-identified photos, so faces and license plates can’t be seen. Parquery only uses these images to check if a parking spot is occupied, not to identify vehicles. No personal or identifiable data is collected or stored.

How is this a Living Lab?
Through the Living Labs program, we’re helping Parquery test their Smart Parking solution by connecting their AI software to Calgary’s cameras at Lot 25. This project will improve parking management and help drivers find parking more easily.
