Traffic Safety Camera pilot program

Calgary Fire Department Traffic Safety Camera pilot program

The Calgary Fire Department (CFD) is launching a Traffic Safety Camera pilot program, equipping up to eight fire engines with cameras mounted on all four sides.

This initiative aims to enhance visibility for CFD drivers and capture footage in case of incidents or unsafe driving around emergency scenes, protecting CFD crews and bystanders.

Program details

The pilot program will begin with Engine 12 due to its high incident response rate. Crews attend many of those calls on high-speed roadways.

Traffic safety cameras will protect CFD crews and safeguard motorists by providing clear evidence of the circumstances surrounding incidents. The footage will be recorded on all four sides of the engine and provide a 360-degree view of the apparatus and audio recordings.

The footage collected will be encrypted and accessed only in the event of an incident, ensuring the privacy and integrity of the data.

Throughout the pilot program, the CFD will monitor the usefulness of the traffic safety cameras, assessing their impact on safety and accountability within the department.

Privacy concerns

Any personal information obtained by the traffic safety cameras is collected pursuant to Section 33(c) of the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act for the purpose of providing evidence in the event of an incident. If you have questions about this collection, please contact FireLegal@calgary.ca.
