Road repairs and treatment programs
The City of Calgary has many types of repairs for our roadways. Each treatment can help prevent further deterioration and sometimes extend the service life of the roadway.
Paving
Base repairs: Special fabrics are used to repair cracking and distortions in the road. This repair involves excavating the area, laying down these fabrics, covering with gravel, and repaving the road surface.
Pothole repair: Potholes form when moisture penetrates cracks in the surface and freeze, forming an ice pocket. As this pocket disappears, potholes form. During repair, crews clean the pothole area, apply a sticky coat to the road surface, fill the hole with asphalt and compact it with a roller. Find out more at Calgary.ca/potholes.
Surface Overlay (paving): the top layer of pavement surface is removed and new asphalt is laid down. This work may also require curb, gutter and sidewalk repairs beforehand. Information on The City’s paving program is available at Calgary.ca/paving.
Road reconstruction: This work requires completely removing and replacing an existing road. A roadway only qualifies for full reconstruction if it is extremely deteriorated, and other treatments (such as repaving or spray patching) will not be effective. A fully reconstructed road can last up to 20 years.
Other road treatments
Crack sealing: Sealant is poured into cracks on the road. This seal helps keeps excess moisture from penetrating asphalt and preventing further cracking, potholes, and deterioration of the road.
Microsurfacing: Similar to crack sealing, instead of applied across the entire road. This process slows down the natural deterioration of the road and preserves road lifetime without costly and disruptive construction.
Slabjacking: Material is injected to correct dips in the road and sidewalks. Holes are drilled into the settled roadway and grout is injected to fill any voids. The road is raised and leveled to match the existing roadway.
Spray Patching: A quick, and cost-effective way to repair cracked and damaged pavement using a mixture of asphalt and gravel. The road can be driven on almost immediately after the repair.
