About the assistive alerting devices
The assistive alerting devices provide multiple ways of alerting individuals of emergencies, including:
- Flashing strobe lights: Visual warnings triggered by smoke or carbon monoxide detection.
- Bed or pillow shakers: Vibrate to wake individuals during emergencies.
- Loud, low-pitched audio signals: Designed specifically for individuals with hearing loss.
Eligibility requirements
To qualify for a device at no cost, applicants must:
- Self-identify as Deaf or hard of hearing.
- Live within Calgary city limits.
- Be enrolled in a financial support program, such as Assured Income for the Severely Handicapped (AISH) or Fair Entry, or reside in an Affordable Housing development.
How to apply
If you meet the eligibility criteria noted above, you can apply by contacting the Community Safety Team at CommunitySafety@calgary.ca. The team will guide you through the application process and provide more information about the program.
In addition to the assistive alerting devices, the CFD is offering door hangers and stickers that alert first responders there is someone with hearing loss in the home. If you are interested in these items, you can request them through 311. For TTY service, call 711 and request 311.
