Building Connected Communities

Building Connected Communities

Building Connected Communities is an initiative that promotes a community building approach focused on relationships and using local assets. These assets include residents, groups, institutions, physical resources, and cultural traditions. By leveraging these, the initiative aims to strengthen community connections and empower residents to achieve shared goals. It provides resources to improve skills, build social ties, and enhance a sense of belonging and civic participation in Calgary.

Background

In November 2022, a Notice of Motion was passed to create the Connected Communities: Asset-Based Community Development (ABCD) report. In September 2023,  City Council approved the report, which directed the development and sharing of easy-to-use guides based on the principles of asset-based community development to help people connect in their neighbourhood.

As a result, a free toolkit called Building Connected Communities: Asset-Based Community Development toolkit was created. It has six sections with videos, tools and resources to help local communities and groups use these ideas effectively.

On November 22, 2023, City Council also approved more resources into building strong community ties using these ideas by establishing the Building Connected Communities Fund Organizations were invited to apply for funding  to implement and evaluate the roll out of the Asset-Based Community Development toolkit. After reviewing the proposals thoroughly, two organizations—Carya (through the Community Development Learning Initiative) and PolicyWise—were chosen to work together with The City to implement and evaluate the approach.
