If you are a residential property owner experiencing financial hardship, regardless of age, you may be eligible for a credit/grant of the increase on your property tax account.

As an applicant, the following criteria must be met to be eligible for this program:

  • You must be the owner on title for the subject property and must have been on title for a minimum of 365 concurrent days by the end of the subject taxation year.
  • If there are multiple owners on the title for the subject property, all owners must be listed on the application, owners on title who are not applicants may be required to provide proof of alternate residence.
  • You and any other property owner(s) on the application must be an individual/natural person and not be or represent a company.
  • You must not own any other property within the City of Calgary.
  • The subject property must show a year-over-year increase in its property tax levy.

The subject property is not eligible for property tax assistance if a property’s value increased due to:

  • physical changes
  • external non-market impacts (owner-initiated zoning change, servicing, remediation, change in tax status, factual corrections, a change in assessment class)
  • a supplementary assessment
  • a partial development assessment

Alberta Seniors Property Tax Deferral Program

The Alberta government also offers a Seniors Property Tax Deferral Program. This program allows eligible senior homeowners to voluntarily defer all or part of their residential property tax, including the education tax portion. This is done through a low-interest home equity loan with the Government of Alberta.​​​​​​​
