How to apply to drive a taxi or limousine

As of March 2021, a taxi driver’s licence allows you to drive both a taxi and/or a limousine. You do not need a different licence to operate a limousine.

Licence requirements

To apply for a taxi driver’s licence, you must attend the Vehicle for Hire office. To complete the application process you will need the following:

  • A valid class 1, 2 or 4 Alberta driver’s licence
  • Proof of eligibility to work in Canada
  • Complete and pass (minimum 80 per cent) the Livery Driver Training Program
  • A Police Information Check, with vulnerable sector check (for new applications), dated within 60 days and completed for TNDL purpose. To obtain the police check, you may attend in person at any Calgary Police district office or apply online (ePIC). If you live outside Calgary, you must attend your local police jurisdiction to complete the check.

Once all requirements are met, your photograph will be taken and a taxi driver’s licence will be issued. The first licence is valid from the date of issue to the driver’s next birthday. In subsequent years, annual renewal is required.

Proof of eligibility to work in Canada

An original proof of eligibility to work in Canada will need to be presented, such as:

  • Canadian birth certificate
  • Canadian citizenship card or certificate
  • Canadian permanent resident card
  • Current work permit
  • Current Canadian passport
  • Refugee Protection Claimant Document – Certified

Original documents are required with matching names and spellings. Photocopies of documents are not accepted. If applicable, name change documentation must also be provided.

Livery Driver Training Program

Applicants must complete and pass the Livery Driver Training Program. The program may be taken online or in-person (two days at the Vehicle for Hire office. (Currently in-person training is suspended, check back for further updates). The program focuses on passengers with disabilities, cultural diversity, driver safety/enforcement and bylaw information. To pass, you must score a minimum of 80 per cent. One rewrite is a permitted. Access to the online training is provided during the application process.

  • Two (2)-day classroom Livery Driver Training Program: $310

    Online Livery Driver Training Program: $95
  • First licence fee: $135

Non-refundable payments are required for training and licences.

Important: Applicants are responsible to meet all timelines and requirements to keep the licence application active. If your file closes, another application may be required.
