Inclusive changeroom & washroom access

City recreation facilities are for all Calgarians. We provide safe access that respects the diversity of our customers.

Customers have the right to access washrooms and change rooms which correspond with their gender identity and/or gender expression.

Mermaid fins

Mermaid tails may be used with permission from the lifeguard. A competency test may be required prior to approval.

Non-traditional bathing wear policy

The City is committed to providing a safe welcoming environment. We want people from all ethnic and religious backgrounds to feel comfortable in and around the water. Our facility has adopted a non-traditional bathing wear policy as outlined below.

In addition to conventional swim wear, participants may wear:

  • Long-sleeved pants and shirts, tee-shirts and shorts with undergarments or a swim suit worn underneath.
  • Traditional ethnic clothing (e.g. saris and hijabs) with a swim suit or undergarments worn underneath.

For safety reasons, patrons wearing traditional garments (such as saris) are asked to remain in the shallow end of the pool. We ask that they not use the dive tank.

To ensure an environment that is safe and free from external contaminants, all participants are required to:

  • Wear clothing that is different from the clothing worn to the facility.
  • Take a complete and cleansing shower before entering the pool. Showering should occur while wearing the swim attire that will be worn in the water.

Personal inflatable toys

Personal inflatable toys are allowed in the facility if capacity permits. Baby water wings and tube rings on small children are permitted. However, they must be within arm’s reach of a responsible person (minimum 14 years of age).

The use of inflatables requires prior approval from the lifeguard. The lifeguard will consider how much activity is in the pool. Users may be tested on competence and expertise with inflatables. Lifeguards can refuse the use of equipment at any time.

Sanitation

We monitor pool water 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. We use an automated system, as well as qualified staff a minimum of 4 times per day. A water sample is provided to Calgary Health Region once a week for testing. All facilities are cleaned and disinfected daily.

Snorkelling

Use of snorkel equipment (goggles and snorkel) is allowed, pending Lifeguard approval and demonstrated proof of competency.

Full face snorkels are not permitted.

Swimming alone/arms reach age policy

Children under eight years old must be accompanied by a parent or guardian (minimum 14 years of age), including when going down the slides. The parent or guardian must be in the same area and within arm’s reach of the child while at our facility.

Swimwear requirements

While in the pool area, customers are required to wear swimsuit bottoms; swimwear tops are a customer’s choice.

Children three years and under must wear plastic pants over their swim diapers. Plastic pants can be purchased at the pool.
