Agreement reached with Harvard Developments for future Green Line LRT station

The Green Line Board and City of Calgary have reached an agreement in principle with Harvard Developments to acquire the land for the future underground station at 2 Avenue S.W. This is a significant milestone for the project as this station is both the temporary terminus for Phase 1 of the Green Line LRT, from Shepard to Eau Claire, and serves as the future connection between the north and south legs of Green Line.

Negotiations with Harvard Developments began in 2020 when the updated alignment was approved, and the agreement in principle includes both the purchase of land for the station area and the lease of additional land for use during construction. In line with the project schedule, the land is expected to be transferred by the end of Q2 2024.

“Green Line was designed as a city-shaping project and there is no greater example of that than the opportunities for future transit-oriented development at this site. This is a critically important station along the 46-km future alignment and will bridge the Eau Claire and Chinatown communities and connect Calgarians to a treasured part of the city.” said Darshpreet Bhatti, CEO of Green Line LRT.

Rosanne Hill Blaisdell, President and CEO of Harvard Developments shared “we acquired this property in 2004 not for what it was ... but with a vision for what it could be. We believe this site, with an LRT station, has the potential to be a key component in the transformation of downtown.”

In collaboration with Harvard Developments, Green Line met with the current tenants of the Eau Claire Market at an information session to provide project information and timelines. Green Line will continue to work with tenants as construction ramps up in the area and utilities are relocated in advance of the main LRT construction.

This agreement in principle marks another key achievement as Green Line moves forward. Following evaluation of the Request for Proposals in Q1 2023, the Development Partner will be named which will launch an approximately 12-month Development Phase to advance design, establish price and confirm a project schedule. In support of that timeline, Green Line continues to prioritize land acquisition in advance of main construction. All impacted property owners along the alignment have been informed of the project requirements and of Green Line’s interest to begin negotiations.
