Program details

The Growing Spaces Projects & Grants Program directly supports public space improvement ideas in growing communities.

These projects help respond to growth in communities by upgrading public spaces for more people and activity. Submissions for projects that are up to approximately $50,000 can be made by Community Associations (CAs) and Business Improvement Areas (BIAs) in these growing communities.

This program is part of The City of Calgary’s Established Area Growth and Change Strategy (EAGCS), which invests in growing and changing communities to sustain and increase the quality of life for current and future residents and businesses.

Please contact your City Liaison if you have a project idea or want to learn more about the program.

  • For Community Associations, contact your Neighbourhood Partnership Coordinator.
  • For Business Associations, contact your Business Strategist.

Guidelines

For general program information, refer to the guidelines and supporting attachments linked below.

Project area eligibility

Where can proposed projects be located?

Eligible locations for project submissions are within the areas identified by the Established Area Growth and Change Strategy (EAGCS) as experiencing higher degrees of growth and change, which are shown in blue in the map on the right.

Projects proposed within areas experiencing higher growth and change (darker blue in the map) will be given priority. Projects proposed within lower growth areas (lighter blue in the map) must benefit more than one community.

See Attachment 1 for a list of eligible communities.

What types of projects are eligible?

Eligible projects must involve the addition of capital assets to a public space that permanently improve the space rather than being a one-time event or activity. The program’s funding can cover the processes involved in developing the project, including planning, design, permit fees, public engagement, construction, and project finalization. These projects enhance public spaces to support more activities and diverse uses.

Projects can be a single improvement or multiple improvements in a public space. Examples include fire pits, community gardens, and trees. Other examples are gazebos, fitness equipment, gaga ball pits, outdoor rinks, and sledding areas.

Project examples

Capital asset improvements and the steps to develop them are eligible for this funding. This includes:

Community gardens

Community gardens are areas gardened by a group of people (10 persons minimum) for the purpose of providing a garden experience/education to local neighbours.

Community spaces

Community spaces are places where people within a neighbourhood or defined area can gather, connect, and engage in leisure, social, or educational activities, fostering a sense of belonging and community, whether for active or/and passive time.

Active play spaces

Active play spaces can encompass both traditional playgrounds with standardized equipment and natural play spaces utilizing natural elements to encourage active and creative play, as well as inclusive playgrounds designed for children of all abilities. One example is a Gagaball Pit.

Social outdoor spaces

Social Outdoor Spaces are places where people can connect socially and can include items such as Picnic Sites, BBQs, and Fire Pits.
