Festivals and Events 2020 & 2021 Microgrant projects

As Calgarians struggled through the past two years dealing with the impacts of COVID-19, economic shocks have hit our city’s creative industry and the businesses that support them. One of the most effective and time sensitive ways to support this important part of our economy has been through our Festivals and Events Microgrant Program.

We know Calgarians are always looking for ways to safety participate in arts, culture, sport and recreation events. Thanks to this program, we supported 69 events between July 2020 and December 2021 and helped Calgary’s festivals and events industry to improve the wellbeing of citizens, families and our communities.

The results

The first Festivals and Events Microgrant was launched in July 2020 to address event planning challenges while dealing with changing public health restrictions. Our goal was to help organizations with the additional costs associated with new health measures due to the pandemic.

We supported 37 applications with microgrants in 2020 and 32 in 2021. These events provided opportunities for citizens to participate in activities in three ways: virtually, in-person, and a combination of both. We estimate that more than 400,000 people participated in these events between July 2020 and December 2021.

Over the past 18 months, these 69 events reached local audiences as well as regional, national, and international audiences through virtual performances.
