City Council elections

Vote

Voting connects citizens with the political process and each other. During an election Calgarians vote to elect their Mayor, Councillors and School Board Trustees. Elections take place on the third Monday of October, every four years. To learn more about the next election and voter requirements, visit Elections Calgary.

Run for office

To run for Councillor or Mayor, participants must follow the Local Authorities Election Act (LAEA) and ensure they meet all requirements.

Individuals are not considered official candidates until 24 hours after Nomination Day (4 weeks before Election Day) when they file their nomination papers. Candidate information packages, which include nomination papers, are available from Elections Calgary in June of an election year for anyone interested in running for office.

To learn more about becoming a candidate in a Municipal Election, visit Alberta Municipal Affairs or contact Elections Calgary.

Work as an election worker

If you are 18 years of age or older, you can apply to work for an election in Calgary. These are paid positions. You do not have to be a Canadian citizen to apply. Applications to become an election worker are available in July of an election year. To learn more about becoming an election worker, visit Elections Calgary.

Volunteer to be a scrutineer

A scrutineer is a candidate’s representative who observes the voting process at a voting station. Scrutineers help ensure that a fair and transparent election is conducted. If you are interested in volunteering to be a scrutineer, contact your preferred candidate in an election year.
