Food resilience strategy

What is food resilience?
Food system resilience means making sure Calgary always has a steady supply of healthy and sustainable food, even when conditions change. It ensures everyone stays well-fed, no matter what challenges arise.
A food-resilient Calgary means we are ready to handle challenges affecting our food supply. We must adapt to climate, economic and social changes that affect how easily Calgarians can get food. By strengthening our local food systems, we can help ensure everyone has reliable access to food. This applied to both tough times and in the future.
The Food Resilience Strategy shows how The City and its partners can ensure Calgary has a steady food supply. It strives to ensure food is available, accessible, acceptable and sustainable for everyone.
Building a strong food system in Calgary matters because:
- Ongoing crises make food more expensive and harder to get. Especially for those with fewer resources.
- Climate change and global events threaten our food supply, and we don’t have an emergency plan.
- Changing climate makes it difficult to grow food locally and in places where we import our food from.
- Food insecurity has been a longtime issue for many Calgarians.
Our goals
Calgary’s Food Resilience Strategy is built on four core objectives:
-
Food is available
Ensuring food is always accessible from different sources, both daily and in emergencies.
-
Food is accessible
Making sure all Calgarians can afford and physically access food.
-
Food is acceptable
Providing food which meets cultural, spiritual, and dietary needs.
-
Food is sustainable
Creating a local food system that can handle climate change and contribute to a healthier environment.
How we’re building a resilient food system for Calgarians
We will work with community partners, businesses, and local organizations to:
- Increase access to local food sources. This includes community gardens, urban farms and farm stands.
- Improve food distribution and support for people in need during emergencies.
- Promote eco-friendly practices that reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the food sector.
- Strengthen community networks that provide help and food-related support in times of need.
These efforts align with Calgary’s Climate Strategy: Pathways to 2050. They help make Calgary more resilient and sustainable for the future.
