Calgary Built: The Green Line LRT – Episode 3: The 78 Avenue underpass
What does it take to build a bridge beside an active rail line?
In episode three of Calgary Built: The Green Line LRT video series, we answer this question and take a deep dive into the work that has been happening in Ogden to prepare for the Green Line.
The 78 Avenue project has several pieces to it, including the construction of a pedestrian tunnel at 72 Avenue S.E. and a vehicle underpass at 78 Avenue S.E., which will be the new entrance into the industrial area that houses several businesses and the Canadian Pacific Kansas City main campus.
The current entrance at 69 Avenue S.E. crosses a commercial rail line that sees 20 to 30 trains each day. This means traffic back-ups at the nearby intersection and lengthy waits for vehicles and pedestrians to cross into the industrial area for work.
To alleviate this pressure and provide a safer entrance into the area, a new bridge was built that will allow the trains to keep running while creating uninhibited access below.
Follow along in the video below to see all the steps involved in this complex process.
