Meet the Calgarians building the Green Line – Kyle Hucik

As Green Line’s Manager of the Beltline Downtown Utility Relocation Project, Kyle Hucik is responsible for relocating an intricate network of watermains, sanitary lines, stormwater pipes, telecom and electricity lines under buildings, roadways and sidewalks. Kyle’s job is to direct the process safely, efficiently, and with minimal impact to roadways and pedestrian pathways.

He oversees a team of five project managers who help him direct the relocation of these shallow and deep utilities throughout the Beltline as well as other parts of downtown and, in his own words, he loves working with them: “The thing I enjoy most about working for the Green Line is working with an amazing group of talented colleagues and managing a team of project managers to deliver the biggest infrastructure project in the history of Calgary.”

Their work has been as complex as it is crucial; this investment in infrastructure renewal has meant upgrades to utilities, roads, sidewalks, and pathways throughout the downtown hub. As an Early Works project, this will lay the groundwork for further construction of Green Line’s stations as well as track alignment.

Kyle and his team are going above and beyond to effectively coordinate construction in a timely way. They have managed to complete the necessary work at 12 Avenue and Olympic Way in about four months. “If all those pieces of the seven utilities were completed separately, it probably would’ve taken eight to ten months to complete that work,” notes Kyle.

Kyle believes that the Green Line will benefit Calgarians greatly, especially those looking to reach the heart of Calgary: “The current transit system is quire constrained to get people into downtown and only services a small portion of the city so this will greatly expand the service and ability of people to come into downtown.”
