Green light for the Green Line!

Last week we were thrilled to receive the news that the Green Line LRT Project is approved and officially moving ahead!
The City now has a clear path forward for the future of the Green Line LRT Program. On March 18, the Government of Canada and Government of Alberta provided final approval to our updated Green Line Business Case. This approval confirms we can begin construction on the SE Segment of the Green Line LRT and advance work on the Downtown Segment this year.
Shovels will be in the ground this year and notifications were sent to the market this week about the first construction packages. It is time to start building and keep building!
A new business unit called “Green Line LRT – SE Project” has been created within The City, under the leadership of Wendy Tynan, with the sole responsibility to deliver and implement the SE Segment of the Green Line LRT, from Shepard in the SE to the Event Centre/Grand Central Station.
Integrating the Green Line LRT – SE Project into The City’s Infrastructure Services team will ensure that the team can leverage expertise, best practices, resources and knowledge of all our City teams to deliver construction of the first 16 kms, of an overall 46-kms vision for the Green Line LRT.
Work on the Downtown Segment, including the Functional Plan, public engagement, design progression and validation of the cost estimate will be undertaken by the Project Development business unit in Infrastructure Services, outside of the SE Project.
Going forward, our newsletter, website and Green Line social media channels will be focused on the SE Project. We have some work to do to get them updated but look forward to keeping you connected with the people, places and construction projects along the alignment.
Thank you for your continued support. Let’s get to work!
