On January 28, 2025, Calgary City Council voted yes to starting Green Line construction in the southeast, yes to beginning work on the connection into the Downtown, and yes to partnering with the Province on a shared vision for Calgary’s south-to-north light rail transit line that would extend from Seton in the southeast through downtown on 2 Street S.W. and up to 160 Avenue N.
After a decade of planning, more than $6 billion in funding commitments from the City of Calgary, Province of Alberta, and Government of Canada, and almost $1.4 billion spent to date on planning, design, construction, vehicles, and land, the Green Line main construction is set to begin.
To realize this direction, the City will now work with the Government of Alberta and Government of Canada on approval of the updated Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program (ICIP) business case to ensure all previous commitments can be realized and invested into Calgary’s future.
Frequently asked questions (FAQs)
Is Council approving an elevated alignment for downtown?
Council voted yes on a recommendation that reflects the shared interests, realized through the Reimagined Green Line Working Group. The need to connect into the downtown is the catalyst to begin unlocking the long-term city-shaping benefits of the Green Line. To do that though, more work is needed to advance beyond the conceptual plan and the Province confirmed a downtown Functional Plan as outstanding and the responsibility of The City to undertake.
Work will begin immediately on a Functional Plan for the Downtown Segment which will include advancing design, validating the cost estimate from the Province, delivering the impact analysis studies, and a public engagement program to ensure broad support before construction begins.
When could Calgarians expect to see the SE Segment built?
Upon confirmation from our funding partners, shovels will be in the ground in 2025 for the SE Segment from Shepard to Event Centre/Grand Central Station. This work will include the track and systems, 10 stations with corresponding bus terminals, multiple bridge and utility structures, a new maintenance and storage facility, and the final delivery of the new low floor light rail vehicles.
Based on the current schedule, it should take approximately six years to complete construction.
How much will the project now cost?
The Green Line LRT program has funding commitments from all three orders of government. The Province has confirmed their estimate to construct the SE and Downtown Segments will be within the $6.2B in funding commitments but identified that a Functional Plan needs to be developed for downtown which would validate cost estimates.
What is happening with the north portion of the alignment? When will the train go north?
The north portion of the alignment is currently unfunded, but the City of Calgary and Government of Alberta share a common vision for a 46km south to north light rail transit program that will extend from Seton in the southeast through downtown on 2 Street and up to 160 Avenue North.
It is a key priority for Council that the future Downtown Segment allows for the connection to build north, as funding becomes available.
