Green Line Maintenance and Storage Facility

For Calgary Transit, safety remains the most important consideration and the new Green Line will be no exception. Future Green Line LRVs will be regularly maintained and kept to the comfort and safety standards Calgarians expect.

The Green Line will introduce the Urbos 100 low floor Light Rail Vehicles (LRVs) to Calgary, the first of their kind in Canada. Low floor LRV technology has been the standard in Europe, Asia, Australia and New Zealand for decades. It’s now becoming the choice for new LRT systems across North America and marks an exciting step for Calgary’s transit network.

Light Rail Vehicles (LRVs) run regularly to make sure Calgarians get to their stops on time – and they just as regularly require maintenance work to keep the system safe.  “Without maintenance facilities you probably wouldn't have trains running,” noted Fleet Maintenance Team Lead Darko Blagojevic.

Green Line’s future LRV maintenance facility will be located in the community of Shepard. The planned facility will be similar to the Oliver Bowen Maintenance Facility but adapted for the new LRVs, as noted by Green Line Senior Transit Engineer David Schlaak: “There’s been a lot of lessons learned that we’d like to incorporate into the new facility.”

The Oliver Bowen Maintenance Facility consists of a vehicle maintenance run-through shop set up as a three-floor system, allowing for activity on multiple levels. Specialized equipment includes a wheel truing machine, LRV washing and drying facility, sand storage system, material elevators, overhead cranes and machine shop. The facility also conducts maintenance checks, running repairs, and the rebuilding of undercarriages to ensure all trains are running smoothly and safely.
